Thomas Howes 1806 - 1882
Thomas Howes was born in Frampton Cotterell to Jason Howes and Maria England. He was baptised on the 28th of December 1806 at St Michael’s church Winterbourne, before Salem’s Methodist Chapel was built. In 1826 he married Martha Hibbs at St Paul’s, Portland Square Bristol, and they went on to have twelve children. Their first daughter Elizabeth died shortly after birth and is buried at Salem’s Chapel along with her brother Jason. The second daughter Maria, married Henry Melsom a dock labourer living first at 25 Catherine Mead and then 25 Dean Cresent Bristol. Thomas has another daughter who he names Elizabeth before a second son called Jason. Jason marries Victoria Bryant and starts his career as a hatter/furrier before becoming a market gardener by 1901. Eliza, born in 1846, is followed by Mary who married James Chadbourne and moves to Stow on the Wold in 1870. She dies 11 years later at the age of 34. Thomas’ sons William, John and Enos/Eanon make the move to Stockport with the hatting trade as mentioned in the hatting story. Thomas’ last daughter Martha moves to Westbury on Trym to work as a housemaid in 1871 before moving to Somerset and marrying Thomas Holbrow at the age of 40, sadly Martha died the same year.
