Robert
The most prominent butcher in the Howes family was the son of Abner, Robert Howes. Twice married, he ran shops in Bristol's Old Market Street before moving as a cattle dealer to Step House in Frampton Cotterell. On 1861, Robert appealed via the newspapers for the return of a heifer lost at the cattle market. Step House has a long hatting history and not long before Howes's move was the centre of the hat manufactory of the very successful Hall family of London. Most of Hall's work was done in outbuildings and cottages. The property in Park Lane, dating from 1733, is a stand-out building with its shell-roofed portico. Howes retired to Winterbourne Lodge and his funeral from there in 1898 was a local, social event with many members of the Howes clan attending. His second wife, Ellen, was the daughter of Reuben Jefferis who ran another central South Gloucestershire hatting firm Reuben Jefferis became, perhaps, the most successful of the Oldland hatters with at least two hat factories; he bought or leased some 30 cottage properties across the county. In 1861, he had over 20 employees at Oldland Common, including two daughters working as hat trimmers. In 1871, Reuben was living and working from Step House.
Robert was born in Biton during 1831. He married Ellen Jefferis about 1855 in Somerset and they had 3 children. Robert died on the 6th of April 1898 at Winterbourne Lodge and was buried on the 11th of April 1898 at St Michael's Church, Winterbourne.
