Robert Howes 1755-before 1812
Robert was born in about 1755 in Mangotsfield. On the 6th of October 1783 he married Anne Maggs at St Michael's Church in Winterbourne. Robert died some time before 1812.
Of Robert Howes's five sons, four set up furrier businesses, Abner in Kingswood, Enos in Bristol's Meadow Street, Isaac at Staple Hill and Jason at Watley's End; Abner was also an innkeeper in Hanham while Enos kept the Brass Knocker public house; the fifth son, Thomas, was a journeyman hatter in Little London, Frampton Cotterell, between 1814-41. Among the daughters, Naomi married a butcher from the Leonard family, also Oldland Common hatters; Elizabeth joined the hat making Stones of Warmley (near another warren); and Rebeckah wed Peter Fudge, an Oldland Common journeyman hatter.
Over 20 of the descendants of Robert Howes worked as furriers with numbers more running pubs and butcher's shops. Whether the development of these trades was part of a deliberate plan is unlikely, but the move of Robert's son Jason around 1806 to the Warrener's House at Cloister's was strategic
